Researching on, and with, Photographs

24 & 25 October 2024 | V&A Museum, London

Photography is ubiquitous in the modern world and research students across disciplines
encounter photographs during their studies. Yet unlike any other form of image, students
frequently treat photographs as simple sources of information, to be looked through to the
subjects they depict. This interdisciplinary two-day workshop for CHASE students considers
approaches to working with photographs. Bringing together academics, curators and
photographers, we offer training for PhD students from a range of disciplines whose work
involves researching with/on photographs. The workshop will be held over two days in October
2024 at the Victoria & Albert Museum, drawing on its extensive and invaluable collection of
historical and contemporary photography. In 2023, the V&A launched its new Photography
Centre, with a suite of seven galleries showing photography from its foundation in 1839 to the
present. We will draw on the resources of the Photography Centre, but also seminar space and
the print room of the V&A with its major collection of photographs. The workshop will provide
interdisciplinary training and also help students with career development plans and experience
working with cultural industries.
