National Centre for Writing placement

 CHASE placement opportunities at the National Centre for Writing

The National Centre for Writing celebrates and explores the artistic and social power of creative writing and literary translation. Our on-going programme of innovative collaborations engages writers, literary translators and readers, in person and online, in projects that support new voices and new stories, and respond to the rapidly changing world of writing.

Our international writing and translation programme offers a comprehensive range of activities to encourage the translation and promotion of international writing, giving UK readers and audiences access to new and diverse voices, stories and ideas from around the world. The programme encompasses professional development for literary translators, publication projects, promotion and public events, residencies and literary exchange.

We would like to offer CHASE placements for two of our literary translation projects – In Other Words, and Visible Communities. Both placements will include one day a week in our office at Dragon Hall in Norwich, with the opportunity to work from home. We will be flexible according to the location of the successful applicants.

In Other Words

NCW is the publisher of In Other Words, the national journal for practising literary translators and for everyone interested in the craft of literary translation. IOW is also supported by the Translators Association. The core purpose of In Other Words is to explore the artistic and social practice of literary translation, alongside the business, craft and ethics of literary translation.

We are currently taking a short break from publication as we move towards a digital platform. The digital version of In Other Words will share information about literary translation, build community and develop an international network. We are also looking to develop a digital archive of the back issues of In Other Words.

The role of CHASE student will be to:

  • Research into existing translation journals, magazines and websites to help us position the digital version of In Other Words.

  • Carry our research into resources for translators, and into online literary translation courses.

This placement will be for ten hours a week over a period of three months.

Visible Communities

 This project is exploring:

  • Uses of literary translation within literature development in communities around England

  • Relationships that diaspora communities have with literatures written in their mother tongues – who is making translations, what of and where, audiences and readership for those translations

  • Barriers to access and representation

With the aim of:

  • Diversifying access routes to literary translation

  • Strengthening links between the translation community and diaspora communities

  • Decolonising literary translation

  • Expanding the range of literature published in translation

The role of CHASE student will be to:

  • Carry out research into literary translation and heritage language communities in the UK

  • Create a searchable online resource of which publishers are active in which regions and languages, and translators working from heritage languages in the UK

  • Follow up links with projects and organisations working in this field

  • Identify and write up case studies

This placement will be for twenty hours a week over a period of six months.
