University of East Anglia
In the medieval and early-modern periods, in particular, the ability to move with confidence between Latin and vernacular material is invaluable. This two-part residential course will provide you with the tools required to read and understand the Latin texts relevant to your research at a deeper level and will allow you to explore the challenges of working with Classical, medieval and Renaissance Latin materials over the course of the academic year.
Now in its second year, the course will run with two parallel groups. An introductory course will be open to beginners, as well as those with a preliminary knowledge of Latin. The days will be divided between detailed study of Latin grammar in the mornings, followed by the study of selected extracts from Latin literature in the afternoon. Part of the afternoon sessions will be student-led: each attendee introducing an extract from their own research and leading the group’s translation and discussion of this. A second (Level 2) course, with a greater emphasis on Latin as it is encountered in attendees’ own research, will be open to those who have completed the Latin for Early Modernists 2017-18 training. In between the two residential sessions, training will continue online through the sharing of translations and exercises.
Teaching sessions will be delivered by:
Dr John-Mark Philo
Dr Elena Gessi
Mr Thomas Rutledge
