This workshop is designed for doctoral students who work with a wide range of ‘life documents’ including photographs, diaries, oral history, biographies and other forms of life writing. In specialist led sessions, we will work with primary sources to investigate:
· Techniques for reading selfhood and subjectivity through life documents
· Interdisciplinary methods when using life documents
· Working across and between different types of life documents
· Mining life documents for historical experience
· Tracing narratives across different life document forms.
· Potential problems and pitfalls
In preparation for the workshop participants will be expected to read examples of life documents, which will be emailed in advance, plus any extracts from secondary sources selected by the workshop leaders.

3.00-3.30: Tea break
3.30-4.30: Photographs. Professor Penny Tinkler, University of Manchester
4.30-5.00: Final feedback and roundtable. Convenor and Chair, Professor Lucy Noakes, University of Essex.
The workshop is co-ordinated by Professor Lucy Noakes, University of Essex, Professor Claire Langhamer, University of Sussex and Dr Juliette Pattinson, University of Kent.
Funding for this event is provided by the AHRC Consortium for Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE).
